Our humble small business evolved over the course of a few years following the passing of my husband’s father. To preface, my husband, David (the middle of three sons), took advantage of an early retirement benefit to help his mother provide end-of-life care for Glennon, a retired carpenter by trade; the small woodworking shop was nestled behind their modest home.
Because of his own experience with cancer treatments, David took it upon himself to drive his parents to all of Glennon’s appointments, surgeries and treatments. He advocated for his parents, making sure their concerns were addressed, questions answered and understanding confirmed. After Glennon passed, all of the boys visited their mother often; David spending much of his daytime hours with her, feeling as if he was preventing her loneliness. Being a very accommodative mother, Estella doted on her children immensely and when they visited, she would concentrate all her attention on them. Yet she was never “not busy.” Estella had many hobbies: cooking, cleaning, sewing, quilting and cross stitch. She had a routine, and when visitors came, her hobbies waited for her return. Herein lied the dilemma: Estella enjoyed her hobbies and there was a woodworking shop in need of idle hands.
The answer? With gentle encouragement, David took his mother’s advice and began spending time in the shop. Estella was free to return to her tasks. He learned how to use his father’s tools and before long, was creating, what I felt, were absolutely gorgeous pieces of wooden decor. But my taste and what sells were different things entirely.
Through trial, error and much research, David found his niche and began creating rustic food safe wooden decor. Enjoying the craft, and hoping to help reduce our son's college tuition, he created the name, Carving Curves Wooden Decor, thus the small business was born.
My husband can turn the ugliest piece of scrap wood into a beautiful, unique one-of-a-kind piece of wooden decor. Appreciating the beauty of the natural wood-grained items (did I mention some have a pyrography finish?), I soon began experimenting in the making of wooden dough bowl candles. Our small business morphed into Carving Curves Wooden Decor & Candles, LLC.
My name is Jane, and I absolutely love anything that puts delicious scents in the air! Wanting to add more diversity to our business, I also began making wax melts, room spritzers and car perfumes.
Our latest product that we’ve created, and probably the most important (besides the handcrafted, food safe, rustic decor for which our business is best known), is our Carving Curves Wood Nectar, a food safe emollient that keeps the rustic decor in pristine condition.
So, whether you purchase an item for food safe use, a uniquely created piece of rustic home decor, or to enjoy a decadently scented item, you’ve made an excellent choice in supporting our small business! Thank you SO MUCH!!
